The Sandals, john harris, derek delves, will blanchard and ian simmonds came together in 1987 to start a club in londons soho called violets with gentlemens outfitter marc powel.
the club was a response to the scene at the time of acid house and early rave culture.
mixing poetry, games, food and musik, violets took off, leading to other nights incl. the girl with three noses at the wag club - happening at hanover st. and later at the brain club and finally onto the gardening club where tongue kung fu was born.

Around the begining of 1990 the idea for the sandals was hatched along with a shop in londons trocadero called -rich and strange- a large store room in the back of the shop enabled the boys to develop ideas- art and music filled the air and in aug 1991 the band was off to los angeles to take part in an art exhibition at the marquardt gallery, venice beach- returning to london 6 weeks later to find a growing buzz about the band with london recs. and polydor fighting for the band to sign.
the first two sandals recs-profound gas- and-nothing-were produced by paul daly and neil barnes who later went on to international superstardom as - letfield - In 4 short years as the sandals the band recorded two LPs and four singles and a mini LP - at the end of 1994 after hearing the new LP, the band was dropped by london recs.

That time was now well and truly over and contrary to popular belief the band never split up, they just took a well deserved break. Now in 2009, the second LP which was rejected by london recs in 1994 will be released through rudiments in japan, giving the hardcore another chance to dive into the sandals sound, not really a band, just a group of friends painting pictures with music, sound and poetry. Titled - yesterday tomorrow - the LP comes at a very uncertain time but still rings true with its subject matter of climate change and war. the sandals - serious fun.

The new sandals LP was recorded in 1993-4 for London Records. When they heard the demo sessions they decided not to pick up the option for the 2nd sandals LP.
Fast forward 15 years and thanx to Genta Minowa of Rudiments Records Japan whos belief in the validity of this music was persistent, we will now see an almost forgotten chapter in the sound painting that was the sandals.
The CD will soon be available in the Rudiments Record-Store.
